Back Pain

We've got you back...

If you suffer from back pain, you are not alone.  The fact is that back pain affects 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives.[1]  It is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States (only headaches are more common) and is the most common cause of work-related injury and a leading contributor to missed work and disability. It costs Americans at least $50 billion each year.[2]

Conventional treatment for back pain has generally consisted of the use of pain medication, either over-the-counter or the stronger and highly addictive opioids as a first course of symptom alleviation.  While over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen seem relatively harmless, they carry real risks including gastrointestinal, kidney, and liver damage.  In fact, acetaminophen has replaced viral hepatitis as the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States.[3]  There is a growing controversy within the medical community as to the appropriateness of prescribing the more powerful opioids to patients for chronic back pain due to the highly addictive nature of these drugs, which has reached epidemic proportions prompting states such as Massachusetts to declare it as a public health emergency.[4]  According to Harvard Medical School, prescriptions for opioids have increased tenfold since 1990.[5]  While short-term use of medications can provide some much needed immediate relief, they don’t address the actual cause of the problem.  Pain is uncomfortable, but it is a vital signal to alert you to the fact that something is wrong within your body.  Consider this:  You’re driving down the road and your check engine light comes on.  What do you do?  Do you pull over, pop the hood and disconnect the wire that runs from your engine to your dashboard?  Of course not.  But that is essentially what you are doing when you continue to rely on pain medication that is only masking the symptom and not going to the mechanic to actually fix the problem.

Chiropractors are like mechanics.  We carefully assess the structural integrity of the spine in order to identify the actual source of pain.  By using specific techniques such as spinal manipulation, soft-tissue work and postural rehabilitation, we work to take pressure off the sensitive nerves that are sending the pain signals to the brain.

Dr. Douglass has been successfully treating back pain for over 20 years and has saved many people from having unnecessary back surgery.  If you are experiencing back pain, call us today at 850-650-6789 to schedule your complimentary consultation.  At Douglass Chiropractic, we’ve got your back.
